Costa del Sol. Paradisiacal enclave
Bathed by the Mediterranean Sea, the Costa del Sol covers more than 150 kilometers of coastline in the province of Malaga, in the south of the Iberian Peninsula. Its name is no coincidence: more than 325 days of sunshine a year, together with the benevolence of the climate, give us the key to this paradisiacal place. The sunny days a year and the influence of the sea are also noticeable in the character of its inhabitants, their lifestyle and their gastronomy.
Malaga is home to the Malaga-Costa del Sol Airport, which is the third busiest airport in mainland Spain, behind Barajas (Madrid) and El Prat (Barcelona). The A-7 highway crosses the region, as does the old national highway, generally known as N-340. High-speed trains serve the coastal region and inland areas, the AVE service reaches the Málaga-María Zambrano station in 2 hours and 46 minutes from Madrid.
The variety of beaches is one of the main attractions of the Costa del Sol. The province of Malaga is bathed by the Mediterranean Sea and has a total of 161 km of coastline, ranging from Manilva to Nerja.
The beaches of the western part of the Costa del Sol consist of about 90 kilometers. It includes the municipalities that go from the capital of Málaga to the west and includes the municipalities of Torremolinos, Benalmádena, Fuengirola, Mijas, Marbella, Estepona, Casares and Manilva. In this area, the urban beaches stand out where you can enjoy the best experience in contact with the sun and the sea. Some of the most notable are Malapesquera, in Benalmádena; or Los Boliches, in Fuengirola.
The urban beaches of Malaga, in general, are easily accessible and offer a wide variety of services thanks to their proximity to the urban center. From Malagueta Beach, next to the historic center of the city, to those further away from the tourist area such as Pedregalejo Beach. This is located in a traditional fishing neighborhood that has a peculiar charm and some of the best beach bars on the Costa del Sol.
The beaches of the eastern part of the Costa del Sol, in the Axarquía region, have unique characteristics. Many of them have splendid views of the mountains and mountains, steep cliffs typical of this area and beautiful coves that you cannot miss. They cover the area that goes from Málaga to the east and includes the municipalities of Rincón de la Victoria, Vélez-Málaga (Torre del Mar), Algarrobo, Torrox and Nerja.
Some of the beaches that you cannot miss are those of Torrox, recognized as the municipality with the best climate in Europe due to its geography. Nerja is another town that stands out for its beaches. Burriana beach is a good option if you want to rest on an urban beach.
And if you prefer to disconnect all day away from the hustle and bustle, we recommend visiting Maro beach, located in the Maro–Cerro Gordo Cliffs Natural Area. It is a protected beach where scuba diving lovers also go because of the richness of its seabed.
Nature, and on many occasions the laborious hand of man, have given the province of Malaga a rich and diverse natural and landscape heritage. The natural beauty of the Costa del Sol goes beyond its wonderful beaches; from the Natural Parks such as the Sierra de las Nieves - which is in turn a Biosphere Reserve -, to the salt lagoon of Fuente de Piedra, with its flamingo reserve, passing through the cliffs of Maro-Cerro Gordo, in the foothills of the Sierra de la Almijara, where the Cueva de Nerja is also located, or the karst formations of Las Pedrizas and Torcal de Antequera. Without forgetting the meadows, the orchards and the hills of olive and almond trees. The rich landscape of Malaga is not limited to the land surface, its seabed will surprise diving lovers.
The cuisine of the Costa del Sol, as in the rest of Andalusia, has historically been influenced by Spanish, Jewish and Arab traditions. In the city of Malaga, seafood, fried “pescaíto” and gazpacho are very popular. Going for tapas is the best thing you can do to get to know the city's gastronomy, and we can find bars that serve a free tapa with a drink. Tejeringo churros cannot be missing on the streets of Malaga at breakfast time.
The province of Malaga is divided into nine regions, each with its own gastronomic tradition. Depending on which town you visit, you can try different typical dishes and specialties. Cane honey and raisins - unique due to their traditional preparation -, Arab-influenced pastries, tropical crops and olive oil with a designation of origin are some of the stars of the Mediterranean gastronomy of the Costa del Sol.
